Remembrance Sunday was marked this year in Merton with services in Wimbledon and Mitcham.

In Mitcham, the service at the War Memorial in Lower Green West was attended by the deputy mayor of Merton, Councillor Pauline Cowper, civic representatives and members of organisations in the borough, as well as members of the Mitcham branch of the Royal British Legion.

The service at Wimbledon Village was conducted by the Bishop of Kingston Rt. Reverend Dr Richard Cheetham, who spoke about the importance of working towards peace across the world.

It was attended by hundreds of people, including representatives from the council, the British Legion, the Royal Naval Association, the Royal Air Force, the London Army Cadet Force, the Scout Association and Girl Guides.

As well as prayers, hymns were sung including 'O God Our Help in Ages Past' and the national anthem, with musical accompaniment provided by The Merton Concert Band and The Wimbledon Choral Society.

An earlier Service of Remembrance was also held at the Nelson Health Centre on Kingston Road, Wimbledon, which was attended by the Mayor of Merton, Councillor David Chung, civic representatives and the Chair of Merton CCG, as well as the Royal British Legion.
