A Leyton school has won entry to an exclusive Gold Club for helping pupils flourish academically.

Norlington School for boys, is among 95 schools across the capital who have made the grade in the scheme set up by London Mayor Boris Johnson.

The Gold Club was created last year to reward schools which have helped poorer students excel against the odds.

Members are encouraged to share their winning formula with other schools, by arranging visits and seminars, to help prevent children's backgrounds proving a barrier to their success.

Mayor Boris Johnson was the first to applaud the school on their hard-work.

He said: "Congratulations to Norlington School for Boys for its outstanding achievements and hard work of pupils and staff.

"London schools are doing well when compared to the rest of the country, but each of our Gold Club schools is making even greater strides with its pupils.

"There is no one-size-fits-all approach to raising standards, but we hope other schools will be able to benefit as a result of seeing what schools like Norlington are doing to achieve academic excellence."

Headteacher John Hernandez said: "We are very proud of our recent induction into the Mayors Gold Club.

"The academic achievement of all our boys' is at the very core of our work. We believe they are capable of amazing things and year after year they surpass even our high expectations.

"The award from the Mayor recognises the exceptional efforts our staff and students make as we realise our goal of being world class institution."
