COLLEGES across Waltham Forest are ‘fully co-operating’ with police today to try to identify all those involved in the mass brawls in Walthamstow last night.

The centre of the town came to a complete standstill shortly after 5pm as groups of youths began fighting.

Videos of the violent conflicts emerged online revealing big groups of girls clashing, some brandishing baseball bats.

The hashtag #WalthamstowRiots began trending on Twitter with some users suggesting the fight erupted after a clash between two girls who were dating the same man.

Witnesses said the groups were from colleges in the borough, including Walthamstow’s Sir George Monoux and Leyton’s Leyton Sixth Form College (LSC).

The leaders of both higher education centres have said they are working to find out if their students were involved.

Principal Kevin Watson of Leyton Sixth Form College said: “The College is cooperating fully with the police following last evening’s disturbance.

“Clearly, we take such incidents very seriously and will respond accordingly if and when more information becomes available.”

Principal, Paolo Ramella, Sir George Monoux College said: “The College is currently investigating and working closely with local police to find out if any of our students were involved.

“Sir George Monoux College has a zero tolerance approach to unacceptable behaviour, whether inside or outside of College.

“If any of our students are found to be involved in any way, they will face serious consequences.”

Head of Waltham Forest College, Penny Wycherley, said her college will also try to help officers identify anyone involved.

She said: “It is always regrettable that there are such incidents and that young people get drawn into events which may damage their futures as well as others.

“We are of course working closely with police to support them in any way we can.”

Stella Creasy MP called for anyone with footage of the dramatic scenes to save it and send it on to police so all those involved can be punished.

She added she was ‘furious’ at the behaviour of those involved.

She tweeted: “Am furious because these young people have so much at stake and hate to see it wasted in afternoon of madness.

“Seeking ways 2 capture footage being shared online of fight so those responsible can B found- if U saved pls share with police #walthamstow”

Three people were arrested following the incident and Met Police have said they will release an update later today.
