A man has admitted “stupidly” causing more than £7,000 damage to a £100,000 Aston Martin by deliberately scratching the car with his keys.

The Aston Martin V8 Vantage was parked in a supermarket car park in Morning Lane, Hackney, on June 19 when it was vandalised by 48-year-old Gary Brissett.

Brissett, of Clissold Road, Hackney, was filmed on the car’s dashboard camera approaching the vehicle pushing a baby in a pram.

He was caught on camera taking a bunch of keys from his pocket and scraping them down the passenger side.

The recorded footage went viral after it was shared by police on social media, reaching more than 8.5 million people.

Brissett was arrested after the appeal and appeared at Thames Magistrates' Court where he pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage totalling £7,741.

The case was adjourned until September 14.

Sergeant Chris Went, from Hackney police, said: "The power of social media proved instrumental in identifying and arresting Brissett - several people came forward with information and Brissett himself even left comments under the appeal on the Met's Facebook page.

"Brissett has given no indication why he carried out this offence but I have to agree with the magistrate at court who called it a stupid thing to do."
