London Underground has announced who will design and make two tunnel boring machines that will build the Northern line to Nine Elms and Battersea.

Wandsworth Times:

NFM Technologies has been contracted to build the mega machines that will carve a 1.5 mile route underground.

Ferrovial Agroman Laing O'Rourke Joint Venture, which has been contracted to build the extension, plans to launch the machinery in the summer next year.

Each machine will be just over six metres in diameter and 106m long - the equivalent of the length of the pitch at Wembley stadium.

London Underground managing director Mike Brown said: "The award of this contract is a key milestone in the extension of the Northern line. We are well on track for the tunnelling work to commence next year."

The cost of the Northern line extension is expected to be up to £1bn, which is being funded by developers in the area that will benefit from the extension.

The underground project is expected to support 1,000 jobs and up to 50 apprenticeships across the country.
