An axe-wielding robber apprehended in Abbey Wood has been jailed.

Errol Woodger, 28, of Mottisfont Road in Abbey Wood, was apprehended at the St Nicholas convenience store in Abbey Wood Road wearing a balaclava and holding an axe at around 8.20pm on October 13.

Woodger assaulted a member of staff behind the counter, kicking him in the stomach and causing him to fall to the ground.

He then attempted to open the cash register with the axe before attempting to further assault the member of staff.

The victim called to a colleague and together they wrestled Woodger to the ground and restrained him until police arrived.

Woodger was jailed for four years at Woolwich Crown Court on February 26 after pleading guilty to armed robbery and possession of an offensive weapon.

Both victims, men in their late 30s, were treated at the scene for minor injuries.

Greenwich police's Detective Constable Laura Hills said: "This was a vicious attempt to rob the store and I would like to commend the victims for their extreme bravery in tackling and apprehending a man armed with an axe until police arrived.

"Greenwich will be a safer place with Woodger behind bars."
