Police have named a pedestrian killed three weeks ago in a bid to trace his family.

Brian Wallace, believed to be in his early 60s, was hit by a car in Forest Road at the junction with Bell Corner in Walthamstow, on January 22.

Officers described him as a "well-known" builder who had lived in Chingford Road, Walthamstow, for more than 20 years.

Police said they are satisfied the collision victim is Mr Wallace, but he is yet to be formally identified as his next of kin are yet to be traced.

Emergency services were called to Forest Road at 22.20pm and Mr Wallace was taken to Royal London Hospital, where he later died of multiple injuries.

This Is Local London:

Detective Sergeant John Woods, of the North East Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: "No identifying documents were found on Brian or at his address in Chingford Road, Walthamstow, where he was living, and his mobile phone only had local work related numbers on it, making identification and tracing next of kin very difficult.

"We know Brian was well-known as a local builder and it is believed he has lived in the Walthamstow area for over 20 years.

"Local people we've spoken to who knew him state he was a private man and unfortunately knew very little about his family life.

"We've had some mention that he had a family, and that he was originally from the Sheffield area, but so far our enquiries have not resulted in tracing anyone.

"So we are appealing to anyone, especially in the Sheffield area, who may be related to, or may have known, Brian Wallace to contact us."

The 21-year-old driver of a black Mercedes C Class stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has been bailed to a date in late March.
