All aircraft travelling to and from London City Airport could use a flightpath over a potential “Noise Ghetto” in Waltham Forest, it has been warned.
The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has been criticised for failing to notify residents potentially affected by changes to air traffic currently under consideration.
The proposed route includes Bow, Leyton, Leytonstone, Wanstead and Barkingside.
Currently flightpaths are much wider, with long and short haul flights taking different paths.
According to John Stewart, chairman of campaign group HACAN East, thousands of residents have not been informed of the proposals and called for the consultation to be halted.
He said: “What they are proposing is that all planes would follow that exact route.
“It will mean less noise for some people but others will be living under the flight path – living in a noise ghetto.
“I do not think this is the best way forward.
“Local authorities are being consulted but not the people in the community. That is why we have written to the CAA.”
The CAA has been approached for comment.
