England’s U18 boys were denied bronze medals at the EuroHockey Youth Championships in Vienna on Sunday after the Netherlands scored with two minutes remaining to win 3-2 and take the gongs.
Ironically, England had beaten the Dutch 3-1 in their final pool game, courtesy of a hat-trick from Surbiton's Jonny Ruiz, to clinch their place in the semi-finals.
Ruiz was on target again in Saturday’s last-four match against Spain, but by then, the Spanish held a three-goal lead, and reached the final with a 3-1 victory.
Spain went on to lift the title with a 5-2 win over Germany.
James Gall joined Ruiz in the starting line-up for all five games, and goalkeeper Peter Philips belatedly made his tournament debut at half time of the third place play-off.
