In March, I embarked on a captivating journey to Barcelona with over 40 students from my school. It is a city renowned for its rich history, vibrant culture, and breathtaking architecture. Over five unforgettable days, I discovered a tapestry of enchanting sights and made so many new memories that I will never forget. Here, I share my top recommendations for anyone planning their own Barcelona escapade.

La Sagrada Familia: No visit to Barcelona is complete without marvelling at the architectural masterpiece that is La Sagrada Familia. Designed by the visionary Antoni Gaudí, this basilica is a testament to creativity and ingenuity. From its towering spires to its intricate façades, every detail tells a story of passion and dedication. Be sure to book tickets in advance to skip the queues and witness the ethereal beauty of the interior, though we were not able to go inside this time.

The Beaches: Barcelona offers many beaches for you to sit back and relax on. Our hotel was in Tarragona, and it offered a beach just a 30-second walk away! Barceloneta Beach is also a fantastic destination for anyone planning on staying in the city centre. Be sure to bring sun cream and try to plan your trip for the hotter days.

Park Güell: Here you step into a whimsical wonderland at Park Güell, another gem crafted by the mind of Antoni Gaudí. This sprawling park is a kaleidoscope of colours! You can stroll along the iconic mosaic bench, soak in panoramic views of the city, and immerse yourself in the surreal beauty of Gaudí's imagination. Beware that entry is not free, and you want to get tickets beforehand.

Montserrat: Escape the urban hustle and venture into the mystical mountains of Montserrat, located just a short journey from Barcelona. Here, towering rock formations and ancient monasteries lay in wait. We all took the yellow cable cars up into the mountains, and though it was scary for some, I think we can all say confidently how mesmerising and picturesque that scenery was.

Las Ramblas: Prepare to immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of Las Ramblas, and be sure to use your Spanish skills to communicate with the people at market stalls! Stretching from Plaça de Catalunya to the waterfront, this bustling thoroughfare is a microcosm of the city's eclectic charm. Explore bustling markets, street performers, and sidewalk cafes as you soak in the lively atmosphere. Don't miss the renowned La Boqueria, the most famous market in the whole of Barcelona.

As we Townley students (and teachers) bid farewell to Barcelona, we all took back cherished memories that could never be replaced or remade. From the iconic landmarks to the hidden gems, each experience was one that none of us can forget. It stands to say that Barcelona promises an unforgettable journey filled with discovery and wonder, so be sure to plan your trip right and make the most of it!
