Whatever will be will be

It’s that time of year when we gaze into our crystal balls and start predicting the events of the next 12 months.

I know it's a bit early for Christmas...

Christmas cards. I know it is slightly early to speculate on anything to do with the Yuletide season but this particular purchase is playing on my mind. Since I was a small child posting cards in my lower school Christmas post box I always made sure that mine were the biggest and best.

Club rules

Brookside Boys’ Club had a packed Annual General Meeting last week. A lot of the time money for good causes such as this is not enough in terms of encouragement for the volunteers who run the place. Support is what is required to help the club flourish.

Questions, questions, questions

I hate being asked questions. People who stop me in the street for some kind of random survey always get a woeful look as I shuffle away quickly with my head down.

The boys are back in town

It was good news indeed this week that the Brookside Boys Club in Borehamwood got long term funding to run the club. It is a wonderful place for children to socialise, play sports and generally keep out of trouble. A sad aspect is that its founder Henry Redman didn't get to see his beloved club secured for the next three years.

You get nothing for free

I was stopped on Monday by a man who tried to give me his ticket for the train. He was on his way out of Borehamwood station and I was buying a ticket at the machine to go into central London.

How to keep a little community spirit

Community spirit is something that is taken for granted. My parents have lived in the same area in the midlands for over 25 years now and more than anything they enjoy the fact that they can walk down the street and over a dozen people will say hello to them. They may just know the person by face but everyday familiarities are mandatory.

Maggots and slippers

Rats, mice, ants, wasps and cockroaches. If you had to share a hospital bed with one of these which would it be?

Don't close our post office

When the official announcement first reached the Borehamwood & Elstree Times about the potential closure of Elstree post office my reaction was one of utter disbelief. I had in my mind already earmarked either Radlett or Shenley as places that would be targeted by the Government cull on this vital community service.

Post your views

I remember from the age of about six years old I used to be taken to the local post office by my dad.

How hard is it to ride a bike?

I rode a bicycle for the first time in two years last week. My friend is off to France in a month to take part in a race to raise money for a cancer charity.

The as-much-as-you-can-eat diet

My friend sent me an email link to something called an "all-day diet" a few weeks ago. She is the rudest telephone conversationalist as she is always eating so I told her I would stop calling her if she didn't stop munching away.
