Sound Advice: Mandolins and melodeons
St Albans-based folk duo Na-mara, a.k.a Paul McNamara and Rob Garcia, headline Loughton Folk Club on Thursday (May 31).
They sing Celtic-style pieces from a variety of countries, backed up with some skilful mandolin and guitar playing.
Support comes from solo melodeon player Owen Woods.
Note – previously billed act Stuart McNair has had to cancel at the last minute but will return to play at the club at a later date.
Entry is £3 and it's from 8pm in the Loughton Club building in Station Road.
Jez Franks hosts a jam session on behalf of E17 Jazz at Walthamstow Cricket Club next Wednesday (June 6).
Admission is £3 and all levels of skill welcome.
The club is in Greenway Avenue and doors open at 8.30pm.
Promoters What's Cookin', who specialise in American-style music, are putting on a host of shows at the Birkbeck Tavern in Langthorne Road, Leyton, over the coming week.
All gigs are free although donations to the acts welcome.
The Spangles play on Friday (June 1) with special guests Russ Chandler, Gary Smith, Enna Scarr and Rosie May. It's from 8pm in the upstairs room of the pub.
Then on Sunday (June 3) retro instrumental act The Bikini Beach Band perform in the street outside the venue as part of the many jubilee street parties being held this Bank Holiday weekend.
They're on about 2pm, followed by skiffle band The Severed Limb at about 3pm.
Come 6pm, the music will move inside with a performance by country rock group The Ugly Guys.
Folk-Americana band The Cedars play the pub on Wednesday (June 6), with Australian singer-songwriter Rich Webb providing support from 8.30pm.
Pop act The Sweeney headline the Square in Harlow on Friday (June 1).
Support comes from garage rock act The Breakdowns.
Tickets are £6 on the doors, which open at 8pm.
It's a over 16s-only show.
Waltham Abbey Folk Club has a Singaround jam night on Monday (June 4).
It's at the Royal British Legion HQ in Brooker Road from 8.30pm, and costs £1.50p.
