Sound Advice: Wham-Bam 2012

By Daniel Binns »

After a few weeks off of (presumably of rock and roll excess) local musicians up and down the land are re-attaching their guitar straps and polishing their drum sticks in preparation for another year.

Following the sad closures of iconic music venues the Plough Inn and the Standard, both in Walthamstow, many are hoping 2012 will prove brighter than a rather gloomy 2011.

And to start, Sound Advice is pleased to report that the 'Crisis at Christmas' fund-raiser held by local acts at Ye Olde Rose and Crown in Walthamstow raised more than £300 over the festive period.

This weekend normal service resumes on the local music scene with rock bands The Runaways and the Candy Runts helping to kick off the new year at the Artisan Music Venue in Chingford Mount on Saturday (January 7).

Support comes from Slam and After the Eye.

Entry is £6 on the door and it starts at 8pm.

Tom Paley headlines Walthamstow Folk Club on Sunday (January 8). A master of his craft, Mr Paley has played with the likes of Woody Guthrie and was the founder of New Lost City Ramblers.

He'll be playing his authentic American tunes on a variety of instruments including banjo, fiddle and guitar.

Admission is £6, or £5 for concessions.

It's at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre Pub in Hoe Street, and doors open at 7.30pm.

John Horler and Mark Nightingale are scheduled to play the East Side Jazz Club in Leytonstone on Tuesday (January 10).

Entry to the night, held at the Lord Rookwood pub in Cann Hall Road, is usually around £5.

Doors open at 8.30pm.

Dynamic duo Fiddlefit perform at Loughton Folk Club on Thursday (January 5).

They play a wide range of folk music influenced by everything from traditional English, to Cajun and Russian.

Entry is £3 on the doors, which open at 8pm.

It's at the Loughton Club in Station Road.

Covers band AlReady Legends play Ye Olde Rose and Crown on Friday night (January 5) in a free gig in the main bar.

Waltham Abbey Folk Club hosts a singaround jam night on Monday (January 9) on the theme of ploughing.

Entry is £1.50p and it starts at 8.30pm at the Royal British Legion headquarters in Brooker Road.

Folk rock acoustic act Galley Beggar headlines the What's Cookin' night at the Birkbeck Tavern in Langthorne Road, Leytonstone, next Wednesday (January 11).

Support comes from Americana singer-songwriter Cusack, a.k.a. Essex's Lance Baldock.

The evening gets going at 8.30pm and entry is free, although donations to the acts welcome.

Got a gig? Let Sound Advice know by sending an email to dbinns@london.newsquest.co.uk two weeks prior to the show.
