Sound Advice: Warm folk in Waltham Abbey

North-west folk scene stalwart Derek Gifford is coming to Essex on Monday (November 14) for a special performance at Waltham Abbey Folk Club.

Mr Gifford has received praise for his varied repertoire of both traditional and contemporary material topped off with a warm vocal style.

Doors open at 8.30pm and it costs £5.

The club is at the Royal British Legion HQ in Brooker Road.

Unsigned rock bands The Stabilisers, Kickstarter, Doldrums Yea and The Donuts play the Standard Music Venue in Walthamstow on Thursday (November 10).

The gig, hosted by promoters Club Bus Wind, costs £6, or £5 with a band flyer.

Doors open 8.30pm.

Stray – featuring Del Bromham – play the club on Saturday (November 11). Admission is £10 and doors are at around 8pm.

Then on Saturday (November 12) it's the turn of tribute act Strange Doors to headline the Standard's hallowed stage.

Support comes from post-punk indie band Belter.

Former professional gardener turned full-time guitarist Dave Beckett plays Loughton Folk Club on Thursday (November 10).

Entry is £3.

It's at the Loughton Club in Station Road and doors open at eight.

Traditional ballad playing master Chris Foster performs at Walthamstow Folk Club on Sunday (November 13).

The gig is at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre Pub in Hoe Street.

Doors open at 7.30pm and it costs £6, or £5 for concessions.

Nathaniel Facey performs at The East Side Jazz Club in Leytonstone on Tuesday (November 15).

Doors open at 8.30pm.

Entry to the club, at the Lord Rookwood pub, normally costs around £5 to £6.

Garage rock 'n' roll act The Fabulous Penetrators headline the Birkbeck Tavern pub in Langthorne Road on the Leyton and Leytonstone border this Saturday night (November 12).

Doors open at 8.30pm and its free, but donations welcome.

It's organised by promoters What's Cookin', as is a second show at the Birkbeck on Wednesday (November 16) by rock duo Cowbell.

It's also at 8.30pm and free.
