Chernobyl children enjoy day at seaside thanks to cabbies and Bromley police cadets
CHILDREN affected by the Chernobyl disaster enjoyed a day at the beach with the help of Bromley police cadets.
The cadets helped out on the annual Albany charity taxi run from London to Herne Bay, which caters for terminally ill children of the 1986 nuclear power plant accident.
There are only eight of the children left with the numbers reducing every year so, for the first time ever, British children were invited to come along too.
The day began in a cafe in Cotmandene Crescent, St Paul’s Cray, for breakfast before going on to nearby schools to decorate the taxis and collect the children.
The convoy then headed off to Herne Bay, where activities had been laid on for the children all day before ending with a party at a working men’s club.
All the London cab drivers were volunteers who had given up a day's work to take part in the event.
Bromley head Cadet Zoe Blackman said: "I had a really great day and got so much out of helping the children.
“The best bit was seeing the smile on their face when they saw the sea.
“They all went in swimming as well even though it was a bit cold."
