On Wednesday the 28th of March, The Hollyfield School hosted their Spring Concert, a wonderful evening displaying the school’s musical talent. Miss Neville, the Head of the Hollyfield Music Department, organised and directed the evening, as well as conducting the various choirs and instrumental bands.

The concert began with the Hollyfield Orchestra, which consisted of strings, wind and brass sections combining to create a spectacular performance of ‘The Lord of the Dance’. Next were the Year 7 Hollyfield Performing Arts Scholars and the Junior Choir (years 7 and 8), who sang a medley from ‘Moana’. Some of the choir sat on the floor with drums, replicating the movie’s Hawaiian ambiance. This was followed up by a handful of year 7 vocal and instrumental soloists. The first half of the concert was concluded with a performance of ‘Somebody to love’ by the Hollyfield Chamber Choir. Tom Harrap, a tenor in the Chamber Choir, said that he “loved the encouraging atmosphere, and most enjoyed singing Queen”.

During the interval, performing students could mingle with the audience, and buy drinks and snacks from the refreshment stand at the back of the hall.

The Senior Choir kicked-off the second half of the concert with ‘One Day More’ from Les Misérables and ‘Wayfaring Stranger’. After this, the Hollyfield Rock School took to the stage. Three student bands, each a combination of vocalists, guitarists, pianists and drummers, performed songs by Coldplay, The Offspring and The White Stripes. Next, a second selection of solos from years 8-13 were performed, including songs from The Greatest Showman and a beautiful song written by a Year 13 student. To end the concert, The Hollyfield Swing Band played four pieces: ‘Hawaii Five-O Theme’, ‘Moanin’, ‘Rutabaga Ramble’ and ‘Living on a Prayer’.

The evening was a great way to celebrate all the musicians in our school and was hugely enjoyable for both the performers and the audience. When asked what her favourite part of the concert was, Year 10 music student Caitlyn said, “I enjoyed the Chamber Choir and the bands.” Maisie, a Year 8 soloist singer, shared her thoughts about the concert, “The feeling of you all working together on something you love is amazing”.
