On Monday the thirteenth of November The Hollyfield School held a remembrance service to honour soldiers who have fought and fallen in war.

The remembrance assembly was held for the youngest students in the school year sevens and included tributes to the soldiers, a performance of Latin choral music and a speech from the head teacher Mr Maltby. Mr Buckman, Head of History, led the assembly and begin with a speech that inspired the young pupils to spend the day contemplating about the music and tributes they were about to hear. After a poetry reading of In Flander’s Field by the head teacher, the performance and art scholars from the school showed their respect by singing a hymn, which reminded people God is always there.

The School’s Chamber Choir, led by the school’s head of music Miss Neville, commenced to sing their version of Ave Verum a Latin Hymn written in 1791. The service then proceeded to the two minute silence and the reef laying, all the years presented a reef and a short tribute for the soldiers then the teaching staff presented a reef and a tribute. After this had taken place, the reefs were then taken outside and laid next to the flagpole which is situated outside the main building at Hollyfield. Mr Buckman quoted that “the assembly created time for students to reflect in the busy school environment in the twenty first century,” in addition to this he went on to say “the music and tributes were very befitting for the occasion.”

The Hollyfield school respects and fundraisers for the poppy appeal every year and wishes to continue for years to come.
