Innovative group, ‘ArtsOne Rocks’ is a unique and original hub for budding musicians in Sutton. With the interest and competition in the music industry ever growing, ArtsOne Rocks gives students aged 8-18 the opportunity to learn vital skills and techniques that they will need for their talent to flourish. The feedback and experiences of those who have attended these classes has been fantastic and the students have found it extremely beneficial towards taking their next step in music, that may be a career in music or simply as a hobby. The most rewarding aspect, said to be the opportunity to perform as part of a band and not just as solo artists. The success of the young musicians has been evident, through many continuing to study music at degree level, at highly regarded further education institutions such as the Academy of Contemporary Music (ACM) and the British Institution of Modern Music (BIMM).

ArtsOne Rocks is part of the ArtsOne group, inspiring young students to pursue their talents in areas such as music, drama, sports and gym. The local group meets at Glenthorne High School, every Saturday, with three, 2 hour sessions running between 9am-4pm. The participants are assisted by enthusiastic staff to develop their technique, understanding of Rock and Pop music and their confidence in performing and interacting with other musicians. The sessions consist of group run activities with specialist instrumental tutors and industry professionals, who teach songs and skills that every budding pop or rock band will need to succeed in the music business.

In the past, the group has participated in many competitions and performed productions for parents and the local community. Productions include, note for note renditions of iconic Rock and Pop albums such as Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, the annual summer festival ‘Glastonthorne’ and termly showcases to parents, displaying all the skills students have been learning in the previous weeks. Recently the group performed at ‘Enjoy Christmas in Sutton’, at the beginning of the festive season as the Christmas lights were switched on in the High Street. In July ArtsOne Rocks enjoyed travelling to Paris and delighting the Parisians and tourists with their music. In January, ArtsOne Rocks begin rehearsals collaborating with ArtsOne Drama to produce Queen’s hit musical, ‘We Will Rock You’ (to be performed at Easter) and embarking on a Stevie Wonder themed project, celebrating his years of contribution to the music industry.

With 2017, comes an exciting opportunity with taster sessions for those interested in joining ArtsOne Rocks. On 7th January, students can attend a free taster session of the classes to experience what it is like to be part of the music group, and to consider joining. It seems the wide range of opportunities available through ArtsOne Rocks have helped to enrich the skills of many students who attend and enjoy music in a way they may not have before.
