“You’re better off than most people they say”. “First world problems “ they say. “Well at least you aren’t starving” they say. Do our problems matter any less than someone else or do other people have problems which matter more ? Obviously there are people who are starving and who are hungry all the time, struggling to find clean water and who are stuck in atrocious situations due to the society they are born in.They can’t help that.  But we can’t help that either. It sounds selfish that having too much homework and being overwhelmed that you have to pick up your siblings but it’s part of your life - and you don’t like that part. Just how the poor have to scavenge for food - we have to scour our fridge. We didn’t ask to be born this way but we will sure as hell complain about it.

It’s a matter of perception in a sense. There’s no doubt that our upbringing affects the way in which we view things but it also affects the things we find troublesome and though we mock others for their problems, it brings us back to the question - do other people have problems which matter more ? Society seems to feel that the more problems you have the better - if you complain to someone in year eleven about your exam stress for your end of years they say that you shouldn’t worry about it and that GCSEs are more important and stressful. Why do people compete for the most pressure?

Then again - compare doing your GCSEs to fighting for the right to have education. Yet again that horrible word -  compare. The most stressful moments of our life are stressful - no matter what other people say - they matter. It doesn’t affect my life at all that there are children starving because in all honesty it doesn’t affect me - so I don’t care. People say that we should help the less fortunate, and we do , but why ? Why do we feel the need to help others? Perhaps it is to show others about how great and humane you are as a person - which is what I personally believe people do these sorts of things for or maybe you are just caring and kind. But we do nothing for free in this world. So let’s not pretend anymore. Throw off the veil of humanity and show everyone who you really are . The true you doesn’t have to follow what others want. The true you is free. People say that this is quite selfish and maybe it is or maybe selfishness is just being true to yourself. Why do people think being selfish is a bad thing, a terrible thing, an native and homegrown vice? Don’t be afraid to be you , they say and create the label selfish is you dare indulge in such a thing. Other people’s problems don’t matter to you because they aren’t you. People shouldn’t expect others to care - that way when they do , it is unexpected  and kind. Why does being selfless have to be the standard? It doesn’t - if we can change.
