For those looking for a different type of Easter egg this year, look no further than Steven Spielberg’s latest film ‘Ready Player One’. Released on 28th March 2018, it is the perfect mixture of science-fiction, action and fantasy. The film is based on a 2011 novel of the same name, by Ernest Cline.

‘Ready Player One’ is set in 2045, in dystopian universe encapsulated by virtual reality. Characters rely on a virtual network stylised as ‘the OASIS’ to compensate for their bleak and desolate lives. When the creator of ‘the OASIS’ dies, James Halliday (played by Mark Rylance) leaves virtual Easter egg’s scattered amongst the network, with the prize of finding them being Halliday’s fortune.

Spielberg, who produced and directed the film, clearly intended to leave behind some Easter eggs of his own, placed at various moments during the film. These include references to the 1980’s, as Halliday was fascinated by the pop culture of that era, such as the use of the Bee Gee’s “Stayin’ Alive” amongst the nostalgic 80’s soundtrack of the film. There is also a dedicated scene in the film to psychological thriller “The Shining”, a 1980’s film based on the novel by Steven King.

Spielberg distinctively intertwines pop culture references throughout the film, while retaining its fast-paced and action-packed feeling. The film cannot be designated a specific genre, highlighting how it should be watched by anyone and everyone that is passionate about film.
