You have the sun shining down on you, the flowers blooming and bees buzzing. What do these make you think of? They make you think of spring. For English people, the 20th March is one of the most anticipated days of the year as we are finally able to tear off the 5 layers of clothing we have on and wear shorts and t-shirts. Leading up to this day, news of the Beast from the East confused us. Since when has a cold weather front to this extent overtake the UK in March? Although English weather can be incredibly interchangeable, this was a whole new level. The Beast from the East brought icy winds and snow all the way from Siberia. It is called the Beast from the East as it comes from the Eastern part of the world.

However, just when you think you have seen the worst of it, Storm Emma comes as well, mixing the two to create one large, indomitable force of freak weather. In some areas, there were even cases of the temperature going down to -12 degrees Celsius. But how does this affect the everyday commuter? The majority of people take public transport to get to school or work everyday, whether that may be the train, bus etc.

The harsher the weather, the more delays there are with public transport. Many students that go to my school were not able to go into school on several occasions because of the severe delays with the trains. From this, they were forced to stay at home instead of going into school. My friend, who usually takes the train to school and was not able to come in due to delays, said that, ‘I was so happy when I found that I was not able to go into school, both because of cancellations of trains and also the actual closure of the school.’ British weather can be a very hard thing to understand sometimes and most of us have just learnt to accept all the freak weather that goes on, even if it means that it snows in March.
