Competing can be good for students, as it inspires them to work harder in order to achieve more. For instance, we work hard and revise, in school, so that we do well in exams. This competitive spirit can be good for students, as it helps us learn things, we wouldn’t have otherwise learnt. A student from Newstead Wood School says “I think competition is good for us because it helps us reach our full potential and gives us something to aim for”.

However, some people argue that competition can cause pressure. The constant expectations of students to do well in exams can cause pressure, which could lead to stress. Stress isn’t good in the long term, as it can cause long term problems for your heart and blood vessels.

On the other hand, competition prepares students for the real world. Adults regularly compete in the real world, for example, in job interviews. Therefore, it is arguable that the earlier we are introduced to competition the better prepared we are to face challenges in life.

Having asked my dad whether he thinks competing is good for students, he said: “I think competition is good because it gives a purpose in whatever you do, but also prepares students for succeeding when faced with challenges on a day to day basis”.

My sister’s perspective on this question was: “I think competing is good. While the pressure and stress of competing can cause problems, it makes one tough enough to be able to manage things better in their real lives”.

To conclude, having a competitive spirit will help us achieve and work hard in life, and teach important lessons. Despite, there being problems that can be caused by competing, they can be overcome with the correct outlook to achieve, learn and compete.
