Student Leadership in school.

Student leadership is at an all time high in modern schooling. It prepares children and adolescents for roles and responsibilities that occur after education, in the workforce and general life skills.

On Monday 29th January, the year 10 sports captains at Eltham Hill School hosted three interform netball competitions for year 7,8 and 9. This event ran for the entire day meaning that the sports captains were off timetable and were in complete control of the event.

The year 10 students involved with leadership in the sports department had planned this tournament completely. They organised the larger jobs, such as umpiring and booking dates to the smaller, less thought of, roles like making signs for the changing room doors. However, they were not completely alone as they had Miss Clarkson, a PE teacher/ leader for student leadership at Eltham Hill, to guide them and help them organise and plan the event. She helped them by establishing jobs and roles that needed to be fulfilled before and during the tournament and assisted them with the organisation of these at the regular meeting’s that took place once every two weeks.

The three tournaments went extraordinarily well and was definitely a “Fun, new experience” for the sports captains. It was described as “Hard work”, “Enjoyable” and a “Good way to learn as a team as well as an individual”. Miss Clarkson mentioned that she was “Really impressed with the organisation prior to the event”, the “Timings were really good” and that she was “Impressed with the way you conducted yourselves in front of the students”.

After a long day of netball, everyone was completely exhausted and was ready to go home and catch up on some well-earned rest.

Congratulations to 7M, 8H and 9A for being the winning forms from your year’s competition. Well done!!!
