Every Christmas, St George’s Players in Beckenham perform a traditional pantomime of seasonal silliness. The pantomime has been running for many years and is the cornerstone for many local families’ entertainment in the run up to Christmas.

Written and directed by Gill Whinder, this year’s festive offering is an alternative version of Puss in Boots. The old Baron has died without leaving clear instructions of who should inherit his fortune. The only witness is his gigantic pink and white cat, Puss. This tale of adventure, involves singing mice, a warm-hearted baker, a scheming Lady Tweddle and her odious son and a romance between a vacuous royal and a beautiful villager.

St George’s Players are a group of amateur actors and singers who meet twice weekly from September to rehearse. This is no need to audition, all are welcome and talents are fully utilised whether for costume-making, make-up, prompting or the more usual thespian activities. The age range of this year’s participants is 10 to 80+. This inclusivity allows all to feel of value and gain confidence. St George’s Church Hall with its permanent stage provides the perfect venue for this spectacular show with plenty of room for the audience.  Live music is provided by fantastic pianist, Christian, who doubles up as the set designer.

Gill’s hilarious script incorporates foot-tapping songs, local gags about Beckenham and current affairs and the traditional banter with the audience. It is clear the cast are having a fabulous time and this energy is transmitted to the audience who love to join in. All in all, this is a funny and frivolous pantomime which everyone can enjoy. Beyond that, it is an opportunity for people of all ages and backgrounds in Beckenham to have a great time together and produce light-hearted entertainment for the local community.

Puss in Boots by St George’s Players will be performed on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th December 2017. Tickets are available from St George’s Church Beckenham Office or via the website (Adult £10 and Child £5). A festive treat not to be missed!
