The National News is currently full of dreadful stories.  There is the on going war in Syria, terrorist attacks all around the world, the uncertainty of all that Brexit will bring to us in the UK and the forthcoming inauguration of President Trump.  There are so many things to worry us and to keep us awake at night that it is refreshing to hear of a good news story.  Certainly we cannot begin to instigate change on a global scale but by each of us making a positive change in our local community we can instil some of that “feel good factor” that we may be lacking.

“Free Cakes for Kids Bromley” is one such voluntary group, it is made up of volunteer bakers who bake and deliver birthday cakes to families who are experiencing difficulties and are unable to provide a birthday cake for their child.

Referrals often come from outside agencies such as the Orpington Food bank, Bromley Mencap and Bromley Women’s Aid or from individuals themselves.  The service is free, friendly and confidential.

One of the community bakers is Sue McWilliams.  Sue regularly bakes for Free Cakes for Kids and it is a way of enjoying her hobby of baking. Sue says “I love to see the pleasure on the recipients’ faces when I deliver the cake and it is lovely to be able to provide a birthday cake for a child who otherwise would not be receiving one”

The organisation was founded in December 2008 by Henriette Lundgren in Oxford and it has now grown to nearly 60 groups across the country.  As a shared idea it is open to anyone who cares for cake and their community.
