Imagine living in the UK for more than 50 years, and one day being threatened with deportation. Imagine being forced to give up the life that you have built over the course of many years.

This is the harsh reality faced by much of the Windrush generation, in the UK at the moment. The history of this situation stretches all the way back to the 1950s in which the Empire Windrush vessel landed on British shores. This ship carried 492 men from the Caribbean. These brave men settled and started a new life in the UK, and at the time they were helping the country rebuild.

However, more than 50 years later many who are apart of this Windrush generation are at threat of deportation despite settling here and living most of their lives in this country.

This is the case for Paulette Wilson, whose story was covered by the Guardian. Coming to the UK at the age of 10, Wilson has lived in the UK for over 50 years, and last year was threatened with deportation. This is someone who was a civil servant for 34 years and is an honest taxpayer. It was the last minute intervention by Wilson’s local MP that had stopped her from being deported.

However, it should be made clear that Wilson is not the only person in this unfortunate predicament. The sad reality is that this situation faces many more citizens, and it just isn't right.

A scandal of such proportions has torn through the Home Office and resulted in the resignation of MP Amber Rudd from the role of the Home Secretary. Following on from this surprising revelation, Theresa May has appointed MP Sajid Javid as acting Home Secretary. What will come of the situation is now in his hands.
