So December is done, “fun night” flew by and christmas is cast aside... so whats next?

“new year new me” is the phrase on everyones lips this January, so queue the stream of fruit smoothies, winter salads and rainy gym sessions. tis’ the season to, well, detox. 

You might feel like the best solution to your post-christmas blues is the run it off on a tread mill, however theres a reason why you might be horribly wrong. 

This week the BBC released their own article explaining how “Doctors have issued a warning about the potential harms of undertaking a radical new year detox.” when I first glanced at this article, my reaction was probably the same as yours... quite frankly, I thought it was ridiculous. detoxing is healthy and good for you, so I decided to look into the matter further. 

i discovered how The idea of detoxifying or purifying the body of harmful substances is not a new method! it has infact been around for centuries. 

they cycle in and out of popularity, like most trends but there are no real numbers on how many people have tried a detox plan, much less stuck with them. there are many different methods and ways to detox and that is why nutrition experts are worried over possible risks from lengthy or repeated “fasts”. 

the main problems include “Vitamin deficiencies, muscle breakdown and blood-sugar problems” (according to msnbc.com) 

so, maybe put down your weighing scales and your liquid diet book and calm down. 

start your day with an apple, maybe go for an evening run (or even a walk) and maybe go for brown wholegrain pasta instead of white. 

and you'll do just fine.
