Broken down motorists made it to safety just 30 seconds before a huge lorry crashed into their BMW. Emergency services were called to the scene of the collision at roughly 2pm (31st March), according to police, a BMW broke down on the hard shoulder between junctions 12 and 13. A photo taken by the police showed debris scattered around the black BMW which had been smashed into the barrier of the M1. Tire marks leading up to the BMW showed the route that the lorry had taken, helping the police identify what actually happened, leading to the crash. After hitting the BMW, the lorry crashed into a barrier further up the hard shoulder before finally coming to a stop up a grass verge. The police later stated: “Occupants of the BMW broke down in all lane running section of M1 and got behind safety barrier 30 seconds before being struck by HGV”. Two lanes of the hard shoulder are expected to close due to the crash leaving hours of delays all throughout the evening. This incident follows another accident on the M25 near Waltham Abbey last week when two women were killed when they got out of their car after suffering a puncture. Police arrested a 32-year-old man on suspicion of dangerous driving.
