Councils in London are spending the more money cleaning up litter than any other part of the county are according to the Britain Tidy Campaign.

In recent years, Hainault has seen a dramatic rise in the amount of litter that is impulsively being dumped on our streets that were once places where residents could be proud and prosperous in.

It is clear that there are some increased council efforts to tackle this budding issue. The Redbridge council has provided many alternatives to littering, such as, increasing the amounts of bins and providing the public with more posts to stick their gum on yet the amount of litter is on the rise

Many residents of Hainault believe that the main reason for the rise in littering is due to the lack of awareness about littering with the youth. Taniya Bilal, who is a young person from Hainault recently stated that ‘ most teenagers don’t care about the consequences of littering’. She continued to add that ‘ the youth find it convenient to dump their waste because they believe that somebody else will pick it up’. The fact that Teenagers hold such a belief is indicative of a need to educate the youth on the repercussions of littering to both them and the environment.

It is clear that litter blights the streets of London however tackling this issue will clearly be more than forcing individuals to pick up litter and is instead about permanently changing the behaviour of Londoners who believe that it is acceptable to take part in such activities, which should be done through the sufficient education of the youth.
