With Christmas fast approaching, Abridge prepares to switch on its lights once again.

The village, in recent years, has become renowned for its spectacular Christmas street lighting displays that run the length of the main road through Abridge, delighting passing motorists.

Over 40 houses and businesses along the road contribute to the display. The parish council funds some of the more lavish lights in the market square, including a large sign bearing the words ‘Merry Christmas from Abridge’, not to mention a colossal Christmas tree.

However, the parish aren’t the only ones investing in the Christmas spirit; villagers and business owners selflessly empty their pockets each year to pay for the lighting on their own properties.

The combined effect of all the festively lit houses lining almost one mile of road is a stunning entrance to this otherwise unassuming village in the Epping Forest district. The funds for the festive lights around the market square are raised by the parish council at the annual village show in the summer, as well as at the incredibly popular fireworks show in November.

Chair of Lambourne Parish Council John Filby said: “We are delighted to be able to fund the annual lighting exhibition in Abridge again this year. So many businesses and residents come together to enjoy the fun of the holiday season and create a real marvel to share with those passing through. It really does show the community spirit of our small village.”

This year, on Sunday the third of December at 4.25 pm, villagers will gather around the Christmas tree once again to celebrate the switching on of the lights, along with some Christmas carols. Even Santa Claus will be putting in an appearance!
