Bancroft RFC 28-5 Woodford RFC

Bancroft RFC under-15 came out on top last weekend in Woodford’s local rugby derby. A bright and bitterly cold Sunday morning greeted the two sides and with local bragging rights on the line both Bancroft and Woodford took their match preparations seriously. The incentive for Bancroft was that on the last two occasions Woodford had run out convincing winners.

Warm-ups done, studs checked, players briefed, Woodford’s answer to the Calcutta Cup was under way. Immediately Bancroft had the visitors pinned on their try line and after relentless pressure managed to score early. Woodford, being a division 1 outfit, were expected to break back immediately, however, uncharacteristically poor Woodford handling continued with Bancroft pouncing on an error and breaking through for the second try of the game.

At last a response from Woodford came and after an ill-disciplined spell from Bancroft and countless attacks from Woodford, the visitors broke through on the brink of half time giving the travelling side a lifeline. It was unquestionable that Bancroft had had the better half and were perhaps unlucky not to be further ahead at the break.

The contrast in the two sides could be truly seen at half time as Woodford brought on their 7 substitutes; with a squad of 17 Bancroft did not have that luxury. However, what they lacked in fresh legs they made up for in determination and commitment. To rub salt into Woodford’s wounded pride, some dogged forward play and destructive rucking gave Bancroft the opening to bulldoze through and score their third of the game

The situation worsened for Woodford as late in the game another emphatic run from one of Bancroft’s forwards added another 5 points to proceedings. The game finished 28-5, Bancroft good value for their victory.

In a post match interview parent rep. Ian Hills remarked ‘Great credit to Woodford for playing us today. It’s a huge local game and we worried that the boys may get overawed at the start but they really played to the maximum of their potential. It will de difficult for them to repeat that performance again this season, but for now, they, and the coaches, should enjoy an extremely hard earned victory.’

A superb display from start to finish from Bancroft and a ‘difficult day’ for Woodford.
