Christmas Countdown- By Preet Shirgill (Guru Gobind Singh Khalsa College) yr10

The Christmas countdown has officialy began in the borough of Newham; with much enthusiasm and excitement. Many local residents such as: the Burke family have decided to put up and adorn their Christmas trees already as they believe, “Christmas season begins towards the end of autumn and near enough winter.”

The festive spirit is especially illuminated on Eastham high-street, where shops have been enhanced by fairy lights in shape of traditional symbolic elements for example: bells, stars, and candy canes. Street lights and displays have also been hung to create an even more uplifting atmosphere.

However, the high-street is becoming, “more and more chaotic,” according to Mia-(customer). She explains that due to the huge Christmas sales people have been going, “crazy.” Stocks are being cleared as everything seems to be 30, 50, 70 percent off. These great deals are creating havoc as people have been pushing and shoving one another to be the first ones to lay their hands-on products. This has also led to an increase of security as it becomes, “Much easier for thieves to pick pocket or steal items from stores,” according to security guard Steve.

Cafes like starbucks and Costa are also running extremely well in these days as customers often feel the need to take a break in between their tiresome Christmas shopping, with creamy lattes or coffee. They all enjoy their drinks whilst listening to street speeches being made by volunteers expressing their love for Jesus Christ. They had also been preaching how everyone should be thoughtful by helping the homeless celebrate Christmas with a shelter upon their head and food in their hands. These messages were delivered so Christmas could be celebrated by everyone.
