MILLIONS SPENT FOR NOTHING?

Have you wondered why we celebrate Halloween? There are lots of versions but the British explanation involves the Celts who thought the spirits of dead people returned to the earth on October 31st and ever since then this tradition had evolved into what it is today, the one day in the year when children and grownups dress up as their favourite scary character such as; Frankenstein, Ghosts, Witches, Skeletons and go trick or treating, but is this money well spent?

Every year in England around £375million is spent on Halloween. All this money is used to buy pumpkins, costumes and sweet treats. This money could be used for much better purposes such as; charity, going on holiday or even something for the whole family. Do you think that this much money should be spent all for 1 day? Or do you think it is good for the economy and businesses?

People that benefit from this day are retailers and shops selling pumpkins and sweets and decorations and costumes, so you could argue that this is a good thing for businesses. On the other side it could be argued in a time where poverty is high should we be encouraging this type of wasteful spending when they could spend the money on things they really need?

Rita a local resident spoke about her view on Halloween. “I have noticed that every year it just keeps getting bigger and bigger and I think it Americanised tradition, but then again the kids love it and it something to look forward to. As for the money it doesn’t seem to be a costly event.”

Some people would agree and some would disagree with this view on whether Halloween is worth all the money that goes into it.
