From the week commencing of Monday the 27th of February to Friday the 3rd of March, City and Islington Sixth Form is holding a themed learning week entitled #WeAreAllImmigrants. The week’s aim is to raise awareness but also celebrate diversity and multiculturalism; “showing the positive and vital role immigration has played in enriching the cultural and economic lives of people living in Britain today”.

During this themed week, students and staff are able to be involved in many enriching events such as “enjoying an exhibition of student artwork” which explores themes of identity. They are also able to read the “moving and inspirational real-life stories of migrants around the world”. A special event taking place is also the showing of the film ‘In This World’ which tells the story of an unaccompanied child migrant from Afghanistan and his perilous journey to London.

Fatima, a student at the college felt it is “sending out a positive message and saying that we accept anyone and everyone. Despite where we are all from, we’re all equal and unified in a sense and we should support people in a crisis and let them now they can feel safe.” Another student, Fel believed the week “creates positive vibes throughout the college” and she thought “it is a great was in order to show the diversity through the different kinds of students you find in City and Islington.” The week is terrific due to the fact that it is shining light on how immigration should be acknowledged as a good thing. After all, the issue of human migration is one that defines our times.
