An Ilford barber has decided he has had enough of unemployment in the area, so is now giving free haircuts to people going to job interviews. Anderson Boyce, 34, who owns Hair Force 1 (Cranbrook Road, Ilford) had decided that he wants to make a change in the community, and plans to achieve that by giving out free haircuts to people who are going to an interview.

Anderson Boyce believes that the younger generation have odds pitted against them, as it becomes harder to gain a job in today’s society. He also believes that a haircut can boost confidence in a person, and can change “the way people carry themselves”.

Hair Force 1, Cranbrook Road, is located near the Ilford town centre, and is known for its sharp haircuts. I approached Mr Boyce, who elaborated on his work and intentions.

When asked Mr Boyce how haircuts could help unemployment, he said: “When you look good, you feel good and that shines through in the way you carry yourself. “Actually handing over the craft to the next generation on an educational platform in the hope to change lives, much in the same way mine was changed, gives me the greatest joy.”

He further explained his work. “I feel like the youth of today are our adults of tomorrow, therefore it is extremely important to give them the right start to their working lives or careers.”

His work has even gained the attention of the BBC, who made a short film about his work. He explained how he was grateful and happy towards the recognition. “It’s changed my life in many ways; outside of giving me direction, a global skill for life and a career, it gave me a new set of people skills. It opened my eyes to a greater understanding of social awareness as well as taught me to understand people from all walks of life, different backgrounds, beliefs, colours and creeds,”
