With 2017 on the horizon, many individuals around the world have set themselves goals they want to achieve in the new year. For some, these ambitions may be new targets never set before, but for others, these ambitions may be already set targets to continue into the New Year.

For many, the New Year is a time to change something in their lives or do something new or differently in their lives. For instance, some individuals may set their goal to get more exercise into their lifestyle, eat healthier, spend more time with family and/or manage their time more wisely.

However, the concept of New Year Resolutions can be somewhat controversial. One argument is that every day is an opportunity to start afresh. A New Year doesn’t change anything unless one makes the changes for themselves. On the other hand, it is believed by other individuals that the start of the New Year is a perfect time to make changes as it is a new chapter in life.

When asked if she believed in New Year Resolutions, Tahiya Ahmed (16) commented, “I don’t believe in New Year Resolutions personally. I’m not completely against the idea however, I think if you really want to fulfil a certain goal, you should simply start then and there”.  In addition to this, Tahiya stated, “It is not necessary to wait for a new year or new time period. Change can begin from the moment you want it to, motivation is the starting point of a goal and not the beginning of a new year. Every day is an opportunity to improve yourself.”

Alternatively, Maria Akintunde (16) commented stating, “I do believe in New Year Resolutions. They are able to help people strive towards a goal”. Furthermore, Maria added, “New Year Resolutions are more of a motivational thing than anything. They enable people to start afresh and bring new hope to people”. Lastly, Maria went on to discuss the downside of New Year Resolutions stating that, “halfway through the year, if even that far, people tend to forget about their resolutions. I think people need to reminders and prompts throughout the year to encourage them to keep to their resolutions”.

Overall, it is evident that New Year Resolutions are a part of society that may not be to the liking of every individual. However, their intention is to encourage people to use the New Year as a chance to make a change in their life. No matter how seemingly small and big, the New Year is a chance to reflect on the past year and hope for the future.
