4th Shirley Guides helped raise a brilliant £250 for the local community by wrapping presents at Croydon Whitgift Centre for Christmas.

4th Shirley Guides is a local unit that helps the community in lots of different ways. Just last month, the unit brought in toiletries and made bags for the homeless but in the month of December, they decided to offer their wrapping expertise to the public for charity.

I spoke to Meg Passey, who is the Deputy County Commissioner for Girlguiding in Croydon and who helped to run this event. She said, “It is so lovely to see the young women of today give up their Saturdays to volunteer and help the community.”

On the 16th of December, the girls were there from 9:00am to 1:30pm and charged a £2.50 donation for each present. The money they raised went to a local charity that will help disadvantaged young people get an education. This is one of the first times that the 4th Shirley Guides have participated in wrapping presents and all of the girls told me that they learnt a lot and enjoyed it tremendously. One girl, Rebecca Clery, said that, “I’ve learnt so many new skills...especially how to tie a bow!”

Next year, and in the year following, the girls will be participating in many more charitable events, such as baking cakes for Christian aid and much more. If you want to get involved in Girlguiding then take a look at the website and find one near you!
