Social media; good or bad? Many adults in today’s society sneer at the sight of their child so consumed in their phone and constantly have a negative outlook on various apps such as Instagram, twitter and snapchat. But, how often do they think about the positive effects these apps have on the confidence of their child or even how it impacts their communication with others?

I agree that social media can have negative effects on one’s life, causing many factors such as pressure, depression and distraction from the outside world, yet it must be seen how much social media has developed numerous kid’s lives.

Phoebe, aged 15, says that ‘social media has really encouraged me to talk with new people’ and I believe that without it, we would all be much more secluded and unaware of what goes on around us. For example, Instagram allows many children to view someone else’s posts and see their life through a different lens. Surely this encourages interaction and is somewhat beneficial to children wanting to communicate with new people.

I understand that many children become too engrossed in their phones which is definately not healthy for them, but for the majority of kids, this negative outlook on social media must be re-evaluated . Technology is developing and we should embrace it, not ignore it.
