When we think of poverty, our minds tend to leap to the idea of extreme poverty in third world countries. You may have images of dirt ridden water and bones piercing flesh. World poverty is an immense issue which must be overcome, but what many of us forget is that poverty exists closer to home than we may realise. We may not see malnutrition clinging to the residents around us but many are suffering and suffering in silence. Thankfully organisations exist to aid these people in times of crisis such as Purley Food Hub which was launched in 2013.

Purley Food Hub is a food bank run by volunteers and the local community, reflecting the passion of the organisation. Locals who are experiencing crisis and struggling in their lives can be referred to the bank by agencies across the borough. Since their launch they have provided over 76,100 meals for over 8460 people, showing the large impact they have in helping the community.

The positive impact that the food bank makes is incredible. There is a social stigma around poverty and hunger which is damaging to those in need. Those facing poverty are already in a vulnerable position and can often feel isolated and defeated. An added social stigma can emphasis this exclusion and feelings of hopelessness which can be very detrimental. These factors can lead to those in need being too afraid or ashamed to seek help which can lead to further suffering. This is especially problematic due to the fact that those facing crisis are often not at fault, and self degradation will only worsen this issue. This is a harmful cycle which must be prevented, and foodbanks aid this intervention.

Food banks such as Purley Food Hub can only do so much as organisations to help this cause. Public help and donations are absolutely essential to keep the food banks running and to aid those facing crisis. The food bank is supported by local churches, schools, businesses, families and individuals. Without these, the bank would not be able to maintain the commendable work that it currently does. This shows the strength of a community working together and supporting each other to achieve positive change.

So how can you help Purley Food Hub and similar organisations? Food donations are vital as they can go directly to those most in need of them. The website www.purleyfoodhub.org.uk

publishes a monthly list of items which are most urgently needed. This list often contains human essentials such as baby formula milk and female sanitary products which emphasises the urgency of the situation that many people find themselves in. As well as donating items, donating money can also be very beneficial as items which lack sufficient donation can be purchased. Bus tickets can also be purchased for clients with this money, as many of them cannot afford the fares due to their situation.

Even small donations and contributions can make a massive impact to your local community and suffering individuals. You never know when you may find yourself amidst a crisis seeking help. So what is stopping you?
