Is there anything you want? Your first thought is usually to go onto the internet. Online shopping can be cheaper, more convenient and provide a bigger variety of choice which all leads to towns suffering. According to the Guardian, in the first 6 months of 2016, 15 shops closed a day across the UK. Most empty shops are now being invaded by tobacconists, estate agents and Jewellers as others continue to close.

With so many people shopping on the internet, shops such as Amazon are thriving. They earn an average of £873.81 per second whilst others alongside them such as Google and EBay earn big money. They earn an enormous £748.87 and £233.77 per second giving them a place upon the highest earning online shops.

The continuing closure of shops isn’t exclusive to one area of the country – it’s happening all over. One area struggling is Gravesend which despite attempting to revive the town with a £1.8 million investment, still struggles to attract shoppers.  It is a common opinion, that despite the council having the best intention by re-opening the market, this has done little to help regenerate the town centre. Some of the residents of Gravesend are disappointed but not at all surprised to find that two more shops have been recently closed – it is becoming all too common.
