As part of the school’s annual ‘Girls in Sports Week’ English international cricketer, Lydia Greenway visited Nonsuch High School for Girls on 16th March. The idea of the week is to encourage girls of all athletic abilities and interests to take part and try something new with activities ranging from archery to visually impaired cricket to the very competitive corridor sprint to try and run as fast as Usain Bolt.

The after school session involved the students completing a series of stations, each focused on different aspects of the game of cricket. Sylvie, a Year 11 student who attended, said “developing different skills used in cricket really helped me play better in the real games” and found the experience not only useful but enjoyable.

After playing 225 times for England over 13 years, Lydia Greenway announced her retirement from international cricket in June 2016 and continues to work with school girls and coach them with her extensive experience and knowledge of the sport. Her passion for cricket and girl’s in sport has resulted in her opening her own cricket academy to offer high quality coaching for girls aged between 13 and 18. The academy is set to inspire many girls to join in and maybe discover an interest they never knew they had previously.

With approximately 40 students attending the session at Nonsuch, it was evident that many were keen to try something new and it was also a promising sight to see so many girls showing an interest in not only the cricket but all of the other sporting activities on offer during ‘Girls in Sports Week’ at the school.
