London's biggest shopping centre is about to get even bigger.

The proposals, filed with the London Legacy Development Corporation, will create a new shopping level underneath the Marks & Spencer and John Lewis shops on the ground floor.

Proposals have been submitted to expand Westfield Stratford City to create a new shopping level with space for around 75 new shops and kiosks underneath the existing Marks and Spencer store. Level 10 of the car park will be removed, and Level 8 will be changed from parking to retail and is expected to provide around 75 new retail units, including kiosks.

Two new escalators will be built to connect the new stores, which will take up around 150,000 sq ft, with the existing ground floor.

John Burton, head of development at Westfield UK/Europe, said: “Following five years of successful trading where Westfield Stratford City has broken industry records delivering £1.1bn in retail sales and over 46m customers annually, we have submitted an outline planning application to commence the process to engage with the authorities on the potential for an expanded retail and leisure offering.

The planning application is in response to strong demand from international and UK retailers wanting space at Westfield Stratford City.”
