Today, in an age filled with smartphones, laptops, kindles and now even smart watches are we, as a population forgetting the importance of printed books? At Nonsuch we are extremely lucky to have our very own library combined with an IT suite. However, now that I think of it, it has been a very long time since I heard the last person say that they were going to the library to read. Not to print anything, not to finish homework, but to read, just read. This leads to the question that if we are not missing books in our lives, were they really all that necessary in the first place? As the entertainment factor of digital technology has risen, we have found it even more difficult to divide our time between technology and the world outside. This is clearly reflected in the loss of readership in the newspapers with losses of readership ranging from 15.5% to 63.7%. This undoubtedly is due to the fact that all of these newspapers are offering e-copies which are proving far more popular. As the typical, selfish human race we are, we like to argue that we are doing this for the better of the environment, being eco-friendly, but we are starting to live in our own worlds, a world to which the only key is technology. So, how much longer will libraries take to hold up the white flag against kindles? Is our future filled with new improved kindle libraries? Next time someone is telling you about a book they have read ask them ‘was this an e-book?’, if the answer is yes, you will know that we have lost the war to technology. If we were ever trying to against it that is.
