The Lady Killers Review:

Last week, Ewell Castle Senior School’s drama department showcased the play ‘the Lady Killers’ for two nights only. This comedy of manners blended with the poetic justice was truly a night of laughter that will live long in memories for all. The most surprising aspect of the play involved the input of pupils in year 8 who assisted with technical side with members of the lower sixth acting on stage.

The Lady Killers involves a Mrs Wilberforce who is a kind, considerate and caring widow residing by herself in a ‘lopsided’ house, only having the company of a raucous parrot. Only until a gang of conniving thieves formulate a plot to rob a security van for the money, forcing Mrs Wilberforce to unknowingly collude and abet their heist!

The succession of double crossing and chaos that ensued once the money was taken back to the house almost certainly parallels the quarrelling between Margaret Thatcher and the trade unions. The fact that the protagonist ‘Professor Marcus’ wasn’t even the funniest character goes to show how amusing the play was.

Most amusing about the entire play is that when a character attempts to kill Mrs Wilberforce, instant karma by death would fall upon them! In the end Mrs Wilberforce is left with the money but in alternative versions, the money is then given to a starving artist.

In review, this play will definitely inspire me to see more plays whether it be musicals in the west end to school productions.
