Bonfire night is always one of the highlights of the year, and the same could be said at Reigate St Mary’s. On Saturday the 6th of November RSM held it’s annual bonfire night, and once again it was a night to remember. As we all know, in 1605 Guy Fawkes plotted to destroy the houses of parliament. Even today, his legacy still reigns on…

Having gone to RSM for 8 years myself, and with my brother and sister continuing to go there for the next 4 years, I knew full well the reputation of this event and the excitement, admiration and boundless entertainment that went with it. Although the weather was not at it’s best, as usual the RSM community had an excellent turnout and the field was packed with parents and kids alike, ready for the spectacular show to follow. Once again it did not disappoint.

The fireworks, which began at 7 o’clock, once again stole the show and left everyone there awestruck. Parents were sipping their mulled wine, eating hotdogs and burgers and enjoying their usual chats with each other. Running around endlessly like headless chickens, kids were screaming, playing with footballs and glow sticks, spilling hot chocolate everywhere and of course eating far too many sweets. It was a night to remember for all.

Upon entering, you could immediately see the ethos summed up by the school. As stated by the school, ‘the warm atmosphere is something that we cherish. There is a strong community focus within the school and children are happy to play and support each other across the age ranges. From our pupils’ earliest days here, emphasis is placed on good relationships, care for one another and an appreciation of our responsibility in the wider and world communities.’ These ethos were summed up from the moment you stepped inside. Everyone was getting involved, talking, running around, and not one person was left out. The warm atmosphere hit you instantly and it really makes you feel welcome.

But this event was all due to the wonderful organization of FOSMA, the parent-organised charity that helps support the school. Every year they raise thousands of pounds for the school, through fantastic events such as this. Just from this event, FOSMA raised over £1000 for the school. But these events are not just about raising money for the school. They bring people together as a community like you will not see anywhere else, with friends and family coming together to celebrate. Who knew that 400-year-old traditions still today could entwine with the community and bring them together as one?
