Burglar's conditional discharge

A burglar who failed to keep to a probation order because of alcoholism has had his sentence revoked to allow him to receive treatment.

James Prince, 52, of Herkomer Road, Bushey, was convicted of burglary, burglary with intent to steal and theft in November.

Magistrates imposed a 12-month community order which meant he must keep appointments with probation.

However at Dacorum Magistrates Court Prince admitted breaching the order three times in two months.

Magistrates heard that Prince was due to take a detoxification programme at Watford General's Shrodells Unit and a further rehabilitation programme.

The defence asked that the original sentence be changed to a conditional discharge.

Chairman of the bench Judith Hankinson revoked the order and imposed a three-year conditional discharge.

"Further progress with this order is unlikely unless his alcohol problem is addressed," said Mrs Hankinson. "In the circumstances this seems the most practical way to proceed."
