WALTHAM ABBEY: Shops lose licences in under-age sales purge
Ozdil Foods has had its alcohol licence revoked
Ozdil Foods has had its alcohol licence revoked

TWO shops have lost their licence to sell alcohol after trading standards caught them selling to underage drinkers.

Divisional police commander Chief Inspector Ivor Harvey called for the licences at Farmhill Convenience Stores and Ozdil Foods, both on Farmhill Road, in Waltham Abbey, to be reviewed.

But Ozdil Foods owner Gurbuz Ozdil has accused Essex Police of being racist.

Following the decision of the district council's licensing sub-committee, he told the Guardian: "I feel the police are being racist towards us and they have been from the start. Now I will have to close the shop. I haven't got anything else to do and I'll have to go on benefits."

But police licensing officer Simon Fisher stood by the decision, saying: "The bottom line is a review which is the very last step and we had overwhelming evidence."

Figures show the Epping Forest district has the worst rate of underage alcohol sales in the county, with 36 per cent of traders willing to serve to those under 18.

Mr Ozdil and licence holder Eardal Ozdil argued against the evidence, saying one of the trading standards volunteers who was used to purchase alcohol looked much older than 16.

But trading standards officer Julie Peckston, who carried out the inspection, said he was not abnormally tall.

She added: "We don't judge people by their height, he had no facial hair and he looked like a young person."

The police had received complaints from local residents concerned that the shop was selling alcohol to underage customers.

Waltham Abbey neighbourhood policing officer, Sgt Sally-ann Davis, said: "We still get regular calls during the evening, particularly on Fridays and Saturdays, of groups of youths causing a nuisance in that area."

The Guardian broke the news to Farmhill Conven-ience Stores owner Ibrahim Goztas, who did not attend last Thursday's meeting.

On hearing that his alcohol licence had been taken away, he said: "Oh no. Oh no. I don't know what to say.

"I really feel down about this, I'm afraid I can't say anything right now.

"There are four households relying on income from this shop and I have no choice but to get rid of a member of staff. I just don't know what to do."

Yes, no doubt he got the racist card out because he could not finf the hypocrite card. If he is a Muslim he should not get involved with alcohol anyway. Typical!

Another reason why former Tory / Labour voters are going to the BNP. Not because they like them or want to. But, because it is the only way to protest nowadays. Stories like this are all too common. The Police on the whole treat people fairly. If someone is found to be selling alcohol to the underage then that is a crime. Regardless of someones race. It is all too easy to play the race card nowadays. Is is a shocking indictment of modern Britain and needs to be addressed.

How are the police being racist? If youn sell alcohol to those who are, or appear, to be under the age of 18, you are breaking the law and the authorities quite correctly will take away licences. Anyhbody holding a licence to sell alcohol has to know the law and about the people to whom alcohol cannot be sold which includes those under 18. If you do not comply with this, then the law is being broken - where does the racism come into it?
