| Runners set off at the start of the race |
YOUNG runners shrugged off freezing weather to take part in trials for the London Mini-marathon at the weekend at the Eastway Cycle Circuit, Temple Mills, on the Leyton/Stratford border.
Runners aged between 11 and 17 from Waltham Forest, Newham and Redbridge were at the cycle circuit to run for a place in the event.
Each of the borough's trials were run separately.
Boys and girls from Waltham Forest competed for eight places in each of the three age groups that will take part in the mini-marathon in central London on April 17.
Medals were presented by Mayor and Mayoress Michael and Janet Lewis to those placed first, second and third in each race and certificates will be sent to all competitors.
There was a string of outstanding performances by members of the Chingford-based club Orion Harriers.
Their thriving junior programme produced a total of 20 qualifiers for the mini-marathon.
Race winners included Eloise Lecuyer (girls under 13), Alex Gordon (boys under 13), Jessica Ward (girls under 15), Gavin Lewis (boys under 15), Teresa Conway (girls under 17) and Joseph Chege (boys under 17).
Six races were also organised by Newham Council.
Manor Park lad Paige Haines led the way, taking first place in the 13 to 14-year-old's race.
He will join 17 more of Newham's young people in the big run in April.
Deputy Civic Ambassador Cllr Maureen Jones presented Newham's medals and trophies after each race.
She said: "It's great to see so many young people involved in sport, particularly when they are at the age when they could be taking part in the 2012 Olympic Games.
"Congratulations to everyone who has taken part in today's event and good luck to all the runners who will be competing in the mini-marathon."
As well as Paige Haines, Newham's top runners were Emily Henry, George Snow, Alexandra Frost, Philippa Haines and Andre Duque.
