Elders discover their voice in the community
 |
| Jean Goddard will help represent Waltham Forest |
PENSIONERS prominent in the community will be representing Waltham Forest and Stratford at the 2005 public speaking awards in Stratford.
Presenting their speeches with 18 other pensioners at the Connecting Communities awards in Stratford Town Hall on Saturday will be Jean Goddard, 72, from Leyton, Mohammed Qureshi, 68, of Waltham Forest, and Allan Wholas, 60, from Stratford.
Ms Goddard is the secretary of the African Caribbean Elderly Women Support Group and welfare officer and member secretary of the Waltham Forest Sickle Cell Support Group. She is also a member of Age Concern Waltham Forest.
Mr Qureshi is a member of the Seniors in Waltham Forest, a group offering welfare, advice, support and computer training for the housebound.
Mr Wholas is president of the Bow River Cricket Club, secretary of the Hibiscus Caribbean Elderly Association and a member of Newham Mental Health Carers Group.
Eighteen months of training in public speaking and presentation has preceded the ceremony, and pensioners from a number of London boroughs including Waltham Forest and Newham have benefited from the process.
The training has been organised by the African and Caribbean Voices Association (ACVA) in Stratford after it secured a Home Office race equality grant.
An ACVA spokeswoman said: "The aim of the training is to enable pensioners from various racial backgrounds to learn about each other's cultures, build confidence so they can speak about issues they are uncomfortable with, and become keen and active life- long learners."
As well as the award ceremony between 6pm and 8pm, which includes pensioners' dance and musical performances and dramatic revues, there will be an exhibition of artwork, publications and crafts made by pensioners from 4pm to 6pm.
The exhibition and the awards are open to the public and more information is available from Angela Brivett at ACVA on 8536 1894.
