New sexual health centre for Streatham Hill
10:32am Tuesday 4th November 2008 in Where I Live
Streatham Hill is about to experience a sexual health revolution following news a groundbreaking Camberwell sexual health centre is to be replicated in the area.
The clinic in Camberwell, Denmark Hill, which opened in November 2007 after a £1m refurbishment, has pioneered some unconventional methods to make patients feel at their ease.
The innovations that can be expected in the new Streatham clinic - located in the same building as the Edith Cavell GP practice in Streatham Hill - include touch screen self registration machines and consultation “pods” rather than rooms. The machines will also give tokens for vending machines that dispense condoms, pregnancy tests and sexual health screening kits free of charge.
The centre in Camberwell was developed in consultation with users of sexual health clinics who indicated they did not want to wait in a queue for a simple enquiry or minor sexual issues. One of the other main issues raised was the need for a more informal, relaxed atmosphere.
And it has proved a big success, with an increase from 14,000 to 22,000 users since it reopened. The new sexual health centre in Streatham Hill, due to open on Monday, November 17, will aim to replicate this success.
Lambeth PCT communications manager, Kelly Hastings, said: “The centre will be a one-stop shop for contraceptive and sexual health services, providing advice, testing and treatment for common sexually transmitted infections in a friendly and confidential setting.”
“It is being opened on Streatham Hill as this is an easily accessible location for the surrounding areas. Lambeth has high rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections and improving our sexual health services is a priority for Lambeth PCT.”Kelly Hastings
She added: “It is being opened on Streatham Hill as this is an easily accessible location for the surrounding areas. Lambeth has high rates of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections and improving our sexual health services is a priority for Lambeth PCT.”
Funding for the new centre came from both the Guy’s and St Thomas' Charity Modernisation Initiative and Lambeth PCT.
The service, available to both men and women, will be open from 11am-8pm Monday to Friday (to 6pm on Wednesdays) and on Saturday mornings.
